Animal Spirits: Fables in the Parlance of Our Times
Michael Stevenson and Jan Verwoert
Reading January 20, 20:00
Michael Stevenson and Jan Verwoert will read selected fables from the book “Animal Spirits – Fables in the Parlance of Our Times” (Christoph Keller Editions, JRP, Zürich, 2013) they co-wrote over a period of five years. Their fables tell the tales of animals, objects and higher beings engaging in conversations and intrigues that concern matters such as power, money, sex, the buzz of mosquitoes, justice, the glow of Chinese Lanterns, mathematics and the colour of Emeralds.
In his installation-based conceptual practice, artist Michael Stevenson (born in New Zealand, lives in Berlin) enters a twilight zone where science, power, money, maths and material objects become peculiar bed partners. In short his projects attempt to bring rational thought and complete irrationality into co-existance. Disconfirmation is not disproof. In the last years his work has been seen at the following: Liverpool Biennial, Liverpool, 2014, Berlin Biennale 8, Berlin 2014, Tate Modern, London, 2014, Tamayo Museum, Mexico City, 2012, Portikus, Frankfurt am Main, 2012.
Jan Verwoert is a critic and writer on contemporary art and cultural theory, based in Berlin. He is a contributing editor of frieze magazine, his writing has appeared in different journals, anthologies and monographs. He is a professor for theory at the Oslo National Academy of the Arts and teaches at the Piet Zwart Institute Rotterdam, and the de Appel curatorial programme.
